How to Have a Better Hair Day

I’ve had an uptick in good hair days lately! I finally found a go-to stylist and colorist after going through a hard breakup when my longtime hairdresser moved out of town. I also (finally) learned how to use product. Is it just me or has dry shampoo really gained traction in the last couple years? I’ve got super-straight and fine hair and for a long time I thought that meant I needed to wash every damn day (sometimes twice a day). Then, I discovered that using harsh SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) laden products were actually stripping my hair of natural oils that add body and shine without weighing hair down.

At the same time I discovered that the secret to a great hair day was SLS free, all natural shampoo paired with product to add body and texture – I was also trying to rid my bathroom of toxic chemicals. Unfortunately, a lot of seemingly innovative and awesome beauty products on the market are actually highly toxic and were aggravating my allergies and super-sensitive skin. So, I researched and tested products until I found what worked for me!

I’ve mentioned Shea Moisture before and their shampoo and conditioner are still in my rotation. I like to alternate every couple of days (when I wash my hair) between the Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and the Yuca & Plantain Anti-Breakage Strengthening Shampoo to add volume sticking with the Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner throughout. I’ve also added a one day a week wash with the Honest Company Shampoo & Body Wash, which has a deliciously subtle orange-vanilla scent. The Honest Co. Shampoo and Conditioner give more of a traditional suds and leave you feeling so fresh and so clean! My hair is long and tangles easily so I use a bit of the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Extra- Moisture Detangler to get my comb through and prevent frizz and flyaways.

The best part is that all of these products work better than anything I’ve ever used and they meet my conscious criteria for doing business the right way and for being free from toxic ingredients. I use The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep Database and my trusty Think Dirty App – Dirty Meter to help me navigate the labels (and all the words I can’t pronounce).

Day one, I usually blow-dry and wear my hair straight and then day two, I need some product. Enter this amazing little chart of Clean Beauty Swaps from a new favorite beauty site Credo. It led me to skinnyskinny Organic Dry Shampoo which adds the mattify-ing volumizing effect that I’m looking for. A tiny spritz of Yarok’s Feed Your Hold Hairspray and a little heat styling and I’ve got beachy waves for day two and maybe even three…
