Blaire's Top 3 Chemical Free Deodorants

Jun 29,

If you take a look at the back of your popular deodorant brand, I’ll bet there’s aluminum in there. Aluminum-based metal compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds form a temporary plug within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface”. Yup, that’s actual metal your putting into your sensitive and porous underarms every single day to act as a “temporary plug”. That’s the scary info that got me to switch to all natural organic deodorants…and I’ve tried tons (trust me), tons.

The hunt for a toxic-free deodorant can be pretty frustrating and pretty stinky at times, but it’s worth it. So in my years and years of searching, sweating, smelling and finally, succeeding – I’ve found that baking soda is key for fighting odor and beeswax helps with perspiration.

Below are the top three most affective brands that I absolutely love and adore.

Bubble & Bee Organics ~ Pit Putty deodorant sticks come in loads of yummy scents like Almond Coconut and Spearmint & Tea-tree – the best fit for me was the Patchouli, Lemon, Clove – yes, smells like a health food store and I love it. If your first pick doesn’t work for you, their exchange policy is great. The texture is pretty powdery and can crumble when applying, so extra rubbing in might be needed. They don’t have a stick with baking soda and beeswax yet, but said they’re working on it.

Green Tidings – Green Tidings deodorants only come in two options, Lavender and Unscented, but they’re made in a solar powered facility – which is really cool. I preferred the Lavender, an unscented natural deodorant is a bit too risky for me. The texture is on the softer side, can use some extra rubbing in, but doesn’t necessarily require it. Green Tidings has baking soda and candelilla wax, as well as odor fighting magnesium.

Primal Pit Paste – Primal Pit Sticks come in lots of fun and playful scents like Orange Creamsicle and Lemonade. I’ve tried Jacked Up Jasmine, which had a softer almost baby powder smell to it and Thyme & Lemongrass, which was super crisp and citrusy. Primal Pit Paste has organic beeswax and baking soda and goes on effortlessly and easily – definitely the smoothest application of the three.

Remember…because there are no metals to clog your sweat ducts, an all natural deodorant might not keep you from sweating, but will work with odor and is a much safer and healthier option!  Photo Credit: Karla Xeno

The National Cancer Institute –  Aluminum-based compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds form a temporary plug within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. Reports have suggested that these products contain harmful substances, which can be absorbed through the skin or enter the body through nicks caused by shaving. Some scientists have also proposed that certain ingredients in underarm antiperspirants or deodorants may be related to breast cancer because they are applied frequently to an area next to the breast.
