I was totally inspired by Julia’s post last week where she tested out a new product to deal with a specific beauty concern. Rather than overwhelming myself and trying to “fix” everything, I decided to focus on one area that I want to improve and find something great to try. I also needed to re-stock other personal care items with conscious brands. For beauty, I’m focusing on skin brightening and evening out my complexion overall. Here’s my most recent haul from the beauty counter and corner store.
Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins: Mega-Bright Skin Tone Correcting Serum & Dr. Andrew Weil For Origins: Mega–Bright Skin Illuminating Moisturizer – As I’ve gotten older, I’ve definitely struggled with bouts of skin issues that can all be traced back to hormonal changes. Specifically melasma and hormonal acne, both of which mean dark discolorations and uneven skin tone. By working with my doctor and dermatologist, I’ve managed to find a balanced state (changed my birth control) and am back on track. However, I’m sick of feeling like I have to wear makeup all the time to even things out. I’m hoping this serum / moisturizer combo will have visible results and help with fading. The products get positive reviews online and on first use seem like a good fit for my sensitive combination skin. They are free from harsh chemicals found in other lightening serums and are also free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates making them a great alternative for those of us trying to clean up our beauty routine. Dr. Weil contributes 100% of his after tax profits from the sale of these products to his foundation.
Josie Maran: Bear Naked Wipes – I don’t use makeup wipes all the time, but when I do…these are the best option. For the times that you are too “tired” to remove your makeup before bed, at the gym or when you need an extra step to remove heavy makeup — try these. They are gentle enough for my sensitive skin and a portion of what you pay for each pack goes to the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Polar Bear SOS Initiative!
Out Of Africa Body Lotion Lemon Verbena – Especially in winter, I look for heavy duty body moisturizers like this one with pure unrefined shea butter. This one is free from parabens, sulfates, petrolatums or phthalates, its cruelty free & eco-friendly. It has a light fresh scent and the company provides much needed jobs by partnering with local African women’s collectives and further support communities in Benin, West Africa thru their School Children Unite program. 5¢ to 30¢ from each product sold is contributed to help provide medical care and education to children in West Africa.
Tom’s of Maine Botanically Bright Whitening Toothpaste – Peppermint – I feel like an essential step to any “beauty” routine is feeling really confident about your smile. I place high importance on oral hygiene! My last toothpaste purchase was a bust since I accidentally grabbed a tube that had fluoride and my personal preference is to be fluoride-free. This time, I thought I had a winner with Tom’s fluoride-free version BUT I wasn’t looking closely enough to notice that while this is free from fluoride and all natural it does contain sodium lauryl sulfate. THIS Botanically Bright toothpaste is the right one and I definitely recommend it.
