3 Instant Tricks to Lift Your Mood

Let’s face it, the winter blues can get you down. The holiday buzz has worn off, the chilly weather no longer feels magical, and you’re struggling to find the time for those daily Yoga classes you promised you’d attend while writing your resolutions by the fireplace a few weeks ago. But before you start frantically planning your next getaway, there are a few simple tricks you can do to switch your mindset from a January chill to a warm and fuzzy

1. Walk: Stop whatever task has your attention and start movin’ those legs. If you’re in the middle of your workday, get outside and grab a cup of tea, a breath of outdoor air, or head to a new floor you haven’t ventured to and see what you can find. When the days are shorter than those warmer months, it’s important to treat yourself to a mini-adventure the second you start to feel your heart getting heavy. And what if that happens several times each day? Well then you’d better start keeping some sneakers under your desk or in your bag. Movement is an easy way to bring awareness into your body, to connect with the present moment, and to activate your imagination. Prioritize this and you will feel incredible gratitude (and excitement) each time you leave your chair.

2. Give: Focusing out is one of the best feelings us humans can experience. We get to make a difference in someone else’s life while also recognizing our own power in doing so. You can get creative — surprise your Mom by donating a chicken to a village in her name, send an uplifting story to a friend for no reason, or order a week’s worth of KIND bars just for the heck of it. You’ll be smiling from ear to ear in no time.

3. Shine: Wear something yellow. This one requires a little prep, but I PROMISE you it’s worth it. When everything feels a little gray and gloomy, there’s nothing like pulling back your sweater sleeve to see a bright yellow Malaika bracelet or checking out those sunshine-colored socks (for every pair sold, Bombas is donating a pair to the non-profit Hannah’s socks to help them distribute socks to those in need). Why yellow? There are many studies proving that yellow produces an immediate warming effect on the body, and I totally agree.
